To be sure, the adult industry does not have the enforcement arm that, for example, the music industry has. If we were talking about using Tumblr for posting songs, the RIAA would have long-ago stepped in.

Actually format is a technological barrier for publishing. There was a time when paper was almost the only and universal medium for distributing your work. Now the digital era by its inherent flexibility offers many ways and a large diversity of formats to publish contents.

To reach a large audience the format is a key variable in the ‘ePublishing equation’. Web technology through your preferred web browser is one answer because the content is reachable by everyone and allows interaction between writers and readers. It already exists a ‘universal’ format that allows everyone to communicate over the internet and it’s… HTML. The very same language used by blogs, forums is also the underlying ePub (the eBook open standard) format.

In current eBook formats and eReaders the online (or connected) component is missing. I believe that eReaders will evolve and become more powerful and eventually become tablets running a decent web browser (iPad is the first example). Then everyone can read eBooks in a browser base application and more importantly interactive communication.

Browser based publishing will open the door to ongoing publishing where writers will be able to publish their work chapter by chapter (or even paragraph by paragraph) and get immediate feedback from followers or even interact in real time using chat. That’s the paradigm we are embracing at BookieJar. We support the most popular eBook format for now and we look forward to adopting new technologies to enable more connections between readers and writers. .

The idea of the Tea Party wasn't so bad, but it's already been hijacked, way worse than the Republican party was hijacked by the right-wing zealots. You are right that the Tea Party *was* self-organized, but that is becoming less and less true. And you may think your opinion matters, but if you elect one of those nut-jobs, you'll be sadly mistaken.

What ALL the parties need is solutions, not whiners and some of the biggest Tea Party names are just whiners -- Palin and Beck come to mind. The Tea Party isn't even worse than the organized parties there. And, back to the comparison with OSS -- the OSS movement is about solving problems, not complaining. I respect OSS people, even when I disagree with them, but I can't respect people who just complain.

Re: Why Bother Starting a Company?

Lisa - glad you liked it. How much AM1090 do you listen to?

I think the fundamental thing I've learned from everything I've read, seen and heard about this movement is that it's comprised of self-described members. And (fortunately or unfortunately) there is no central "vetting committee." Unlike the Republican or Democrat parties which require me to "register" to participate in their caucuses, there is no party with which to register if I want to participate supporting a Tea Party candidate.

I agree with you that there are some nut-jobs self-associating themselves with various TP organizations around the country - but to say that these few typify the entire movement would be akin to saying that William Jefferson typifies the Democratic party, or that Tom Delay typifies Republicans.

It's rather bigoted to take such a broad brush to an organization comprised of individuals, imho.

While I may not admire the rhetoric of some (in the same way I find some OSS completely useless), I do have to admire the way in which this self-forming force has come to be. In this very way, it is akin to OSS: individuals deciding they want something different and creating the foundation upon which they can self-deliver that difference.

Re: Suddenly, Everyone is an Expert

Interesting theory, but wrong. OSS, for all its flaws, is about enabling people and it's about enabling everyone. Fundamental to OSS is the idea that everybody is allowed their opinion.

The Tea Party movement is about disabling everybody except a small minority or rich white heterosexual fundamentalist Christians. It's not about more possibilities, it's about less -- you won't be allowed to be gay or Muslim or Jewish or a liberal Christain or -- god forbid -- an atheist. Fundamental to the Tea Party is the idea that nobody who disagrees is allowed their opinion. They want to use our government to enforce their bigotry.

If you're looking to improve our government, this isn't the way, and it's certainly not glorious.

Re: Why Bother Starting a Company?

Thanks for the reminder.
